Keeping peace in the worldSince 1945, Canada has played a key role in peace keeping around the world and for the most part steered clear of combat missions. Canada has been actively involved in international organizations that provide leadership in world conflicts and also work collectively against perceived threats. Canada has been a member of the United Nations (UN) since 1945. We were a key partner when the UN charter was written, which lays out basic guidelines on how we will handle international relations. In the complex world of today it might not be possible for Canada to have a distinct foreign policy and act as peacekeepers who expect the USA to continue to enter world conflicts. The threat of terrorism is too great. The UN and NATO must turn their attention to the modern threats we face and the countries must stand solidly together.

The Suez Crisis |
During the Suez Crisis Canada showed the world how they could negotiate peace in very tense situations. Lester Pearson was able to calm down the entire situation within a few days. Seeing this Canada became known as a peace keeper country, something we are still known for today. During this time Canadians were proud of what their country had come to be, although in the following years some events changed some peoples views on their beloved country.

SOMALIA MURDER |
A time where Canada's army was seen as something less than peace keepers is when 2 Canadian soldiers brutally beat and killed a teenager in Somalia. This was a rather low point for all Canadians during this time. A time where some people questioned Canada's international role.
